How can he win with the odds stacked against him?

Blurb

Prince Hamish has no interest in fulfilling his duty of marrying. Not to a woman, at least. That doesn’t stop his mother, Queen Fiona, from presenting him with every eligible noblewoman that enters their castle. He’s certain it’ll be no different with the representative of the Udynea Empire.

So when they do arrive, Hamish is relieved the imperial prince, Darshan, is not the woman everyone expected. Until the man kisses him and Hamish is confronted by the very emotions he has been forced to conceal or be punished for. Emotions he is eager to explore.

But the kiss proves to be a little too public and leads his mother to take drastic measures to ensure Hamish adheres to her family vision. The contest of arms will force Hamish to make a choice: give up his happiness for convention’s sake or send the kingdom spiralling into civil war for the right to love his own way.

Excerpt

Darshan knocked back a few hearty swallows of his drink with barely the bat of an eye. The tankard slammed onto the counter, slopping more over the rim. “Alas, I think Daama might actually give me another of her clips over the ear if I tried to free her. She is a bit of a traditionalist.”

An odd expression took Darshan’s face. It was almost as if he spoke not of a slave, but of family, such as a cherished aunt or grandmother. Perhaps he did see her as such.

Hamish tapped on the handle of his tankard. His memories of his grandparents before the plague took them were dim, but he could imagine having a part of his family sent away without warning. The priests had done that when they’d cloistered his younger sister.

“I suppose there are also others who would react poorly to losing her,” Hamish murmured before drinking deeply. He peered at the ambassador out the corner of his eye, trying to gauge Darshan and finding the man favoured not reacting. “Children, maybe? It must be hard being so far away from your family.” The Udynean capital of Minamist was literally on the other side of the continent. He couldn’t imagine having such distance between him and home.

Darshan shook his head. “I have no children.” Chuckling, he scratched at the side of his nose with a thumb. “And what a bone of contention that is.”

“Your wife must be eager to remedy such an oversight.” Hamish knew without an ounce of doubt that he would already be a father if it wasn’t for the truth of what he’d have to do to turn that into a reality.

A weak, and slightly queasy, attempt at a smile stretched the man’s lips. He snatched up his tankard and mumbled into its depths, “Not married.”

“Oh?” The man was perhaps a little too pretty and foppish for Hamish’s tastes. And a little on the lean side, despite his protests at Nora pointing out the same thing at dinner last night.

“There is a very good reason for that.” Darshan set his mug on the counter and, giving a smirk, motioned him closer. “It is something of a secret.”

Intrigued, Hamish closed the already small distance between them. Amusement danced in the man’s eyes. Hazel. This close, the separate rings of brown and green in Darshan’s eyes were clear in the pub’s light, colours muddied only where they met and merged. That’s nae fair. Of course he would find the prettiest eyes belonging to a man he shouldn’t consider being alone with.

He also couldn’t help noticing the ring of black around the rim of Darshan’s eyes seemed slightly smudged in the inner corners, near where the glasses sat. Was it some sort of powder? The clans would sometimes plaster dyes and paints across their skin during war, but he had heard of men in foreign lands using such things in a more civil setting as fashion and tradition dictated.

The ambassador clapped a hand on Hamish’s shoulder, tearing his attention back into the present. “It goes a little something like this…” In one swift move, Darshan slid his fingers into Hamish’s hair and sealed their lips together.

There was no hesitation in the act, nor any forceful prying open of his mouth to invade with a tongue, just the bold press of his lips. There for a blissful moment then gone.

“Oh,” Hamish breathed. “I… er…” In all his years of fooling around, of rutting with strangers in the dark, he’d never met a man that forward.

Darshan returned to his drink, his face flushed by more than alcohol. His gaze slid back to Hamish as he drained the last of his drink. There was certainly something of an invitation lurking in that multi-coloured depth.

Excerpt

Republican President Mitch Kellum, elected in 2028, urged calm, but the damage was done. Calls for the election to be overturned sprang from all parts of the country. Kellum denied any wrongdoing. It was the Russians and the Chinese, he claimed, determined to destabilize the U.S.

Democrats had lost all remaining political power and the conservative U.S. Supreme Court upheld the election in predictable fashion, six to three.

It was like a bomb had gone off. Protests turned to riots. Far-right fundamentalists took to the streets in support of the election, and faced off with teeming hordes of furious liberals. A nation that had been savagely divided, blue against red, liberal against conservative for the past thirteen years, would eventually fall into violence. It finally happened in Philadelphia on November 9, 2030. Rioting liberals clashed with Freedom Fighters, neo-Nazis, and Proud Boys on Market Street at the beautiful Philadelphia City Hall building. Fisticuffs, brawls, burning cars. Shots rang out. The police, caught in the middle, fell apart; each officer defected to his or her side of the political divide and joined the fight.

The Culture War had begun.

Battlements were hastily built in the streets of Washington, DC, New York, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, and Minneapolis. It was bedlam. The streets became littered with bodies as street fights broke out: Red versus Blue, Conservative versus Liberal.

People fled the cities only to find skirmishes in the suburbs. Ikea parking lots were battle zones. A Home Depot in Enid, Oklahoma, was burnt to the ground. Fires started everywhere.

The country spasmed in violence, hand to hand, block by block. After thirteen years of political loggerheads, the center could no longer hold. Any attempt at civil discourse fell on deaf ears. It was us against them, everywhere.

A typical confrontation would be as follows: Unarmed Liberals vastly outnumbered armed Freedom Fighters. They'd go toe-to-toe in the streets, yelling and waving signs in confrontation. Fist fights would break out. But then someone would get mad, grab their gun, and start shooting. Others would join in and the unarmed protesters would flee back behind barricades of cars, buses, dumpsters and buildings, leaving the dead and wounded in the street. It was like a form of trench warfare—and this was played out in cities and towns across the country. Attack and retreat. Attack and retreat. And anger—people were incredibly angry. They fought tooth and nail, neighbor against neighbor, family member against family member.

In San Francisco the tens of thousands of liberals lining Market Street day after day eventually found themselves being bludgeoned by Freedom Fighters. Skirmish lines fell into place along the main street and shots were fired. Freedom Fighters were hopelessly outnumbered though and, despite having guns, were quickly overpowered by the throngs of San Franciscans. They fled.

Stephe was there with Nicole. They'd come up from Harrison Street to take part in the demonstration that day. Nicole wound up hitting a neo-Nazi with her shoe, bloodying his face while Stephe—feeling nothing but cold rage—just took his rifle and hit him with it.

The National Guard had to be mobilized to quell the riots, and still it wasn't enough. The U.S. Army and the Marines were added and took to the streets with water cannons and tear gas.

Finally the main fights in the bigger cities were quelled by force. After six bloody days the spasm ended. Thousands were dead. Many more thousands were arrested by the military and taken to separate camps, red and blue, for disturbing the peace and inciting violence.

Thus began a new Cold War as Americans could no longer speak to one another.

A Dark Folklore Anthology for Save the Children

Blurb

Some stories paint us sweet, told to children as they fall asleep.

Mother Earth she weaves the world with a whirl of her magic, and her kind embrace shapes us all. Father Time keeps us all, ever constant, ever moving onwards, for time never stands still.

Icy hands and a frozen touch, Jack Frost ushers in the cold snap, coating the earth with sparkly delights. If Jack brings cold, May Queen brings warmth, her delicate touch bringing forth the spring.

Follow the rainbow and maybe you’ll find, a Leprechaun with his lucky pot of gold.

The watchful eyes of Man in the Moon keeps all of the secrets of the night, shining down on us with his silvery light. The Sandman is here to soothe you to sleep, bringing all to slumber with a pinch of magic dust. Shhh, sleep now. Beware the Boogeyman lurking out of sight, waiting under your bed, to catch naughty children in the night. Be good little children, for Santa is watching, and he knows if you've been naughty or nice.

Tales of lore, fair music to our ears. Can you hear it? Did you know? Not every tale is sweet. The truth is darker, our stories more twisted, unlike the rhymes that children hear.

All proceeds will be donated to Save the Children.

This is a mixed M/F and M/M anthology that contains trigger warnings for its dark content. It is intended for a mature audience of 18+.

Excerpt

From Chapter 3

“Hi, and welcome to Charleston,” Alicia said. “I’ve heard a lot about both of you.”

That left one other person. He looked to be in his late twenties, with blond hair in a trendy cut, high cheekbones, and gray eyes the color of the sea after a storm. Unlike the others, he didn’t have a drink or a plate in front of him. The man’s appraisal made Evan shiver, although nothing in his manner seemed hostile.

“This is Sorren,” Cassidy said. “He’s my business partner, and he and my ancestor founded Trifles and Folly—my shop—back when Charleston was first chartered.”

Seth and Evan exchanged a glance. “But Charleston is over three hundred years old,” Seth protested.

Sorren smiled, and Evan caught his breath as he glimpsed the tips of fangs behind his lips. “You’re correct. And I am nearly six hundred. I am deeply interested in finding out about this witch-disciple you hunt. He has, apparently, gone to great lengths to avoid my notice.”

As soon as Sorren spoke, Evan wondered how he could have thought the man was close to his own age. Sorren had a presence that made it easy to believe he was immortal. Instinct warned him not to meet Sorren’s gaze, and he remembered stories about a vampire’s ability to glamour mortals and bend their will.

“Don’t worry. You’re safe here,” Sorren said, apparently noting Evan’s uneasiness. “You are guests in Cassidy’s home, and allies. That puts you under my protection—something I take very seriously.”

Evan pasted on a smile and nodded. Holy shit. What have we gotten ourselves into?

“You already know Teag, and I believe he and Seth have bonded over hacking to get information on some of the cases we’ve worked on. But his ninja computer skills are really an outgrowth of his Weaver magic,” Cassidy said, “which you know at least something about, from the spell-woven braided bracelets you gave each other for your birthdays.”

She sat at the table beside Teag. “Eat first, and then we all want to hear your story.”

Evan wasn’t sure what might pass for normal conversation with this crew, but the banter felt comfortable and familiar. They obviously knew each other well and were friends as well as colleagues. While they ate, the conversation drifted to local happenings, upcoming events, and the shared frustration that went with having to avoid road construction. Even Sorren commented now and again, and Evan noticed that no one at the table seemed to regard him fearfully. Evan glanced at Seth and knew from the look on his boyfriend’s face that the mental wheels were turning, appraising their new allies.

When everyone had their fill of the pizza and had topped off their drinks, the chatter stopped, and they all looked to Seth and Evan. Teag stepped away and returned with his laptop.

“We know a little bit about your hunt for the witch-disciples from the information Teag helped you find in the past,” Cassidy said.

Blurb

Two jobs down, three to go, and job #3 is mine. My name is Ridge Pfeiffer. I’m a dirt poor jewel thief from the wrong side of the tracks, and I don't play well with others.

Theoretically, the deal works like this. I do the job Charlie planned for me and Miranda erases my past, makes my biggest problems go away. Too bad my biggest problem is the one thing I don’t want to go away: Diplomatic Security Agent Davis Ethan.

When Davis caught me breaking into a safe during job #2, I should have ended up in jail. instead, I ended up in his bed. Rich, gorgeous, and privileged, the only thing we have in common is a love of beautiful lingerie and beautiful men. He’s everything I hate, everything I want, and he could destroy me with a word.

There are a hundred red flags surrounding this job, I should walk away and take my chances, but I’m going to do it anyway. Anything to buy me one more night with Davis.

One more job, one more night, and then I’ll leave for good.

“You know we don't have to meet in places like this. I'm willing to spring for some better accommodations.” I said, stripping the nylon bedspread off and tossing it to the floor. I grimaced at the feel of it between my fingers.

“I like this,” Ridge said. “It's perfect.”

“Perfect for what?”

“Perfect for cheap, meaningless sex. And that's all this is.”

I wanted to argue with him, but I also wanted to get laid, and I knew pointing out that we both knew this was more would only chase him away. “Can’t we have expensive meaningless sex? I’ve done it in five-star resorts. All I’m asking for is a place with nice sheets and room service. And a mattress that may have been cleaned sometime in the last twenty years.”

Ridge pushed me against the wall. “We could, Rich Boy, but this is my world and if you want me, you get my world with it.”

“Maybe we could chip in and meet in the middle.”

“Maybe I like seeing the pretty rich boy begging for someone like me in this run down pay-by-the-hour motel.”

“Do you like it here?”

“No, I don't like it. But this is where we are.”

We didn’t normally do this during the day. Dust motes danced in the light rimming the curtains. The room was dark and smelled of things I’d rather not think about.

Except for him. He smelled amazing. Whatever soap or shampoo or cologne he wore carried the scent of oranges and tk.

“Wait, how did you...why did you call me a rich boy?” How did he know?

“Really? I could smell it on you. Literally smell it on you. Your fucking Ambre Topkapi cologne, which sounds like a Pokemon for chrissake. You have perfect teeth, perfect haircut. Manicure, pedicure. You’ve never missed a meal in your life. You don’t live anywhere in the real world. Do you even know any normal people?”

“Everybody I work with.”

“And are you friends with them?”

I wasn’t. Not really. I tried but there was this barrier between us. Really, what could I say about kids and wives and bills?

He slid his hand down the back of my trousers and grabbed my ass. His grip turned into a caress as his fingers brushed across the silky lace and he lost his train of thought. “Are these the same ones?”

“Yes.” I said leaning my shoulders back against the wall and grinning at it. “The purple and black lace La Perla.” He loved those. They might not be the most expensive pair I owned, but they were certainly the most effective at getting him to fuck me through the mattress the way I loved. I had another surprised for him as well, but I’d let him discover that on his own time.

“Anyway. Stop distracting me.” His long fingers wrapped around my wrists, pinning them to the wall. His thumb caressed my pulse point, his thigh pressed between my legs and I couldn’t stop myself from grinding down against it.

“I’m distracting you?”

“Mmm hmmm,” he said mouthing along my neck. I tilted my chin up to give him better access. “You never talk about normal thing. You never complain about car repairs, the cost of anything.” His thumb pressed into the palm of my hand. “This watch?” he pulled away from me far enough to dangle my own watch in front of my eye. I hadn’t even felt him taking it off me.

“Clever boy,” I said, kissing him in reward.

His fox-like grin short-circuited my brain. In my defense, anyone would find thinking impossible with an angel rubbing up against them. I was surprised I could still breathe. “Gotta keep you on your toes.”

“Asshole,” I said, grinning back at him. I snatched it out of his hand, Knowing I was able to only because he let me was incredible arousing. I’d talk to my therapist about that another day.

“You’re the asshole, wearing a thirty-thousand dollar watch in a neighborhood like this.”

“Yeah, but—”

“But who would know? Everyone. We know how much everything costs in a way you never will.”

“We?”

“Poor people, Davey. We know the price of everything down to the penny because we have to.”

“Oh really?”

Really.

I jerked my chin at the shopping bag I had dropped at the doorway. “Then how about a quiz?” My brain came back on line as he backed away from me.

“What kind of a test?”

“I got you a present.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted to.”

Laughing at his suspicious look, I handed him the bag.

He took it gingerly, holding it between two fingers much in the same way I had held the bedspread. “What is it?”

“It’s a present.”

“What is it?”

“Open it and see. That’s usually how presents work.”

From Chapter 1

“I’m kind of surprised that the witch-disciple’s gotten away with things as long as he has, if Simon’s right about his cousin being some kind of badass supernatural vigilante,” Seth mused after they had driven several miles. “I would have thought she and her friends would have cleaned house.”

“Like you said, Charleston’s a haunted hotspot,” Evan replied. “That might take a while to clear out all the bad actors.”

“I hope we’re right about being ahead of the curve this time,” Seth said. “We know the witch-disciple is calling himself Michael Longstreet. We know he’s going after Blake Miller. And if Simon’s right about Cassidy and her friends, maybe we can take Longstreet down without nearly getting killed ourselves.”

“Working with Travis and Brent in Pittsburgh certainly helped,” Evan replied. “And I’m not sure what we would have done without Milo and Toby in Boone. Which makes it all the more amazing that you took out the first one all by yourself.”

“Both of us almost died.”

“But we didn’t.” Although Evan had to admit, silently, that it had been a near thing.

“We still don’t know where Longstreet’s anchor is, or what he uses for an amulet,” Seth pointed out.

“We’ll find them,” Evan replied confidently.

Evan’s phone rang, and a glance told him it was Simon Kincaide. “Hey, Simon. What’s up?”

“Where are you? Is Seth with you?” Simon’s voice had an urgent edge to it. That sobered Evan immediately.

“We’re in the truck, driving to Charleston. Is there a problem?”

“I had a vision. A warning.” Simon’s abilities as a psychic medium were the real deal. “You and Seth are both in danger.”

“Not to be a smartass, but we kinda knew that,” Seth replied. “Seeing as how we’re going after another witch.”

“I think it’s more immediate. I saw broken glass and blood…a flash of something pink…and something about a UFO.”

Evan and Seth exchanged a look. “A…UFO?” Evan echoed.

“Alien hitmen?” Seth sounded incredulous.

“I know how it sounds. I wish visions were more complete. But this was strong enough that it almost knocked me off my feet. That usually means whatever I saw is going to happen soon.”

Evan opened his mouth to say something, just as Seth gripped the wheel with both hands, and the truck swerved. A pink delivery van careened across the median strip, heading straight for them.

“Hold on!” Seth yelled. Evan braced himself.

“What’s going on?” Simon shouted over the phone.

Hitched to the RV, the truck couldn’t maneuver. The van crashed into the driver’s front corner, twisting metal and shattering glass, drowning out Seth’s cursing and Evan’s cry of alarm as the airbags deployed with a bang like a gunshot.

“Guys? Seth, Evan—” Simon called through the phone.

Evan’s world went black.

Blurb

There’s nothing like being blackmailed by a dead man to really bring a group of cons together. And what a group we are: a hacker, a thief, a con artist, a thug, and a Federal agent with an axe to grind. The deal is simple, we do the jobs and Charlie’s lawyer wipes the slate clean for each of us, one at a time.

Since job number one calls for some muscle, it looks like I’m up first. I’m Steele Alvarez, ex-Special Forces Close Protection Specialist (aka, a bodyguard for some not so nice guys).

After learning what the job is — taking down a seemingly untouchable senator with a penchant for beating up young male prostitutes — I’m in. No questions. A bullet ought to do the trick.

Then I met Senator Harlan’s latest victim: Breck Pfeiffer, the gorgeous hooker with a heart of gold and the soul of a fighter. One look at him and I’m gone. That kid laid me out harder than any punch ever did. I’ll do anything to protect Breck, even kill for him. But Breck doesn’t want the senator dead, he wants vengeance.

If we’re going to find a way to bring down the slimebag and get the blackest mark on my record erased, I’m going to need all the help I can get.

Like it or not, we’re all in this together.

Blurb

There's nothing like being blackmailed by a dead man to really bring a group of cons together. The deal is simple, we do the jobs and Charlie's lawyer wipes the slate clean for each of us, one at a time.

Job number two lands right in my lap. I'm Bond. Wesley Bond. (I can't resist saying it that way. Blame my dad, if you can find him.) You could call me a hacker. I redistribute wealth - moving it from rich slimebags to poorer but infinitely more deserving people - and make a tidy profit as I do. My mission, should I choose to accept it, is to bring down some modern-day slave traders.

With the life of the one person in this world I love on the line, I can't afford any screw-ups or distractions. Unfortunately, my biggest distraction is my biggest asset - Danny Monroe. Danny is a leftover complication from our first job. He's a smart, funny, gorgeous ex-prostitute, who can't seem to keep his clothes on. I can't seem to keep my mouth shut around him. But I need a fake boyfriend, and Danny is the only option.

We don't know who the bad guy is; we have no idea how to prove anything. If I'm going to do this, I'm going to need all the help I can get. Like it or not, we're all in this together.

Attention: This book contains explicit sexual content between consenting assassins and not so innocent professors. There are depictions of masochistic masturbation, male chastity, breath play, watersports, humiliation, and torture by eighties hair bands with ginger sprinkles on top.

Phew! Now, that's out of the way, Hi. I'm Mr. No, your friendly communications agent for The Assassins' Guild AKA T.A.G.

I've been authorized by the head honcho himself, Mr. H, to release approved records from the agent files.

Agent Code Name Mr. W was recovering from a near death debacle by way of an easy assignment in a small mountain town. Red flags sprang up immediately around the seemingly innocent English professor. Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery Jacob Peters presented, Mr. W made plans to do what he did best, watch , wait , and then capture and interrogate.

But even the best laid plans can go awry...

Find out what brought Mr. W to his knees in this first release from the archives of The Assassins' Guild.

Excerpt

From Chapter 1 - Evan

“IT FEELS GOOD TO BE BACK ON THE ROAD.” EVAN MALONE WRIGGLED TO get comfortable in the front seat of the black Silverado. He laid a hand on his partner’s thigh and gave a squeeze.

Seth Tanner took one hand off the steering wheel and reached down to twine their fingers together as Evan sat back to enjoy the view. Seth’s dark blond hair still looked sleep-mussed, and he hadn’t completely lost the flush to his skin from a round of wake-up sex before they got on the road. Evan’s heart pounded a little faster at the thought that he had put that look on Seth’s face. The glint in Seth’s chocolate brown eyes suggested that there would be another round once they were done with the day’s drive.

“I missed this.”

Seth raised an eyebrow. “The road trip part or the almost-getting- killed-by-witches part?”

Evan gave him a look. “The road trip. The other stuff just goes with the job.”

“I have to admit, it was nice staying in one place for a few months,” Seth replied. “We put some money in the bank, rested up, and did some great hikes on those trails.” They had taken time off and stayed for a while in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina after finishing their last hunt.

“When all this is over—hunting the witch-disciples—I really want to take the RV around the country just for fun. Are you still on board with that idea?” Evan couldn’t help sounding a little wistful. They still had a lot of dangerous work ahead before they could make good on that dream.

“Sure. There’s a lot to see, and I promised you we’d go all the places you wanted to visit,” Seth reminded him. “But eventually it would be nice to have a house. A home base to come back to. We could still take the RV out when we wanted, but it would give us a little more elbow room...maybe even a yard with a garden.” The fifth- wheeler RV they towed was their home for now, inherited from Seth’s parents.

Evan smiled. “I like that. But it could be a while...I have a long bucket list.”

“Bring it on.” Seth grinned. “I’m up for the sightseeing challenge.”

Moments like this made it difficult for Evan to remember that he and Seth had been a couple for less than a year. They had fallen in love fast, outwitted a killer, and gone on the road together after only four days. Then they started the harder work of getting to know each other, while continuing Seth’s quest to track down the men responsible for a century of murders—including Seth’s brother, Jesse.

Sometimes Evan couldn’t quite believe this was his life. He’d been a bartender back in Richmond, not a warlock hunter. Then a dark witch kidnapped him to sacrifice in a ritual. Seth had saved his life and destroyed the witch.

Nearly a year later, here they were, still together, still alive, and still hot on the trail of yet another murderous witch.

“I’ve never been to Charleston,” Evan said. “Do you really think Simon’s cousin will be willing to help us?”

“According to Simon, she and her friends have tackled much bigger bad guys. I guess he didn’t quite realize what all Cassidy was involved in until just a few months ago.”

“It’ll be nice to meet Teag face-to-face, after all the times we’ve emailed and called,” Evan replied. “I’m looking forward to that, even if I’m not exactly excited about going up against another witch- disciple.”

Seth snorted. “You’d have to be crazy to be excited about that. Nice to know you’re still reasonably sane.”

“As sane as I can be, given what we do.”

Three years ago, Seth had celebrated coming home from the Army by going camping with his younger brother, Jesse, near a supposedly haunted underpass with the goal of drinking some beer, making a spoof video, and debunking the ghost stories. Then something dark and terrible attacked in the middle of the night, dragging Jesse away and leaving Seth wounded and unconscious. When Seth came around, he found Jesse’s mangled body. The cops blamed it on drug dealers, but Seth knew what he’d seen hadn’t been anything mortal.

Legend had it that one hundred years ago, a sheriff and his posse killed dark warlock Rhyfel Gremory. Gremory’s witch-disciples scat- tered, but they swore vengeance on the sheriff, his posse, and their descendants. That began a cycle of ritual killings that led to Jesse’s murder, and nearly cost Evan—one of those descendants—his life.

Seth spent almost two years after Jesse’s death learning about the supernatural and how to fight things most people didn’t believe existed. Then he went looking for the witch-disciples, to stop the cycle and avenge Jesse. That led him to Evan, who was the first of the descendants he saved. Falling in love was a bonus.

Excerpt

The girls started crying and curling into each other. Elliot stood up, his banana abandoned on the ground at his feet. He had a look of defiance on his face.

"No! I won't let you hurt them!" he cried out. "Earth Geo Form Spear," he incanted, drawing the earth into a weapon and snatching it from the air. He swung the spear around him, striking the air.

"No! Don't hurt them!" Lettie cried and I had to stop them.

"What's going on here?!" I cried. I took Alyson in my hands and shook her. "There's nothing there Aly, snap out of it!"

The girls didn't seem to hear anything I said. I turned to Elliot who was swinging his earthen spear at invisible enemies. "Elliot you have to have to stop before you hurt someone!" I called out. I grabbed at his arm to stop him swinging that spear. Just like the girls, he couldn't hear a word I was saying. He struggled against me.

"You were always intelligent, so of course you would be the one to recognize the threat before it consumed you," said a dark voice from behind me. "These others though? They ingested too much of the poison, they can barely hear you let alone understand your words."

I turned around to look at the source of the familiar voice. Seated on the ground, eating my own abandoned apple, was a man I had not seen in five years. His head of black hair, once kept short and clean, had now grown longer than I had ever seen it, the tips curling back on themselves. His eyes were now gray like cold steel, but it was him alright.

"No," I said. "You can't be here."

"Yes, tell yourself that if it makes you happy," the man responded. "But I have missed you son."

I shook my head and slapped myself to get rid of the hallucination, but when I looked again he was still there, munching on my apple, cool as can be.

"Why are you here? You must be a hallucination, it's the only explanation," I say. "If I ignore you, will you go away?"

"My poison forces you to relive all the most horrible things in your mind," came the reply.

"You did this?!" I exclaimed. "But how?! I would have known if you were anywhere near me. I would have known!"

"I would love to explain, but I really do have a job to do," he said, rising to his feet and brushing himself off. "It's a shame you didn't drink more of that wine, it would have made this a lot easier. Oh well, there's nothing more I can do for it. If I want that bounty, I have to kill you here and now."

With that declaration, he dashed forward and slashed at me with a dagger. I jumped backward but too late, the dagger sliced at the back of my arm. I steadied myself with some difficulty.

Now that I knew what was happening, I knew there was only one way to break completely free of the poison.

Drawing up my mana, I began the incantation, "Earth Geo Control Earth Geo Form Soul Container Spirit Soul Reinforce." A bit of earth rose up in front of me and took the shape of my soul container, small and rounded with an air tight lid. I lifted the lid and continued my incantation, "Spirit Soul Move Self Spirit Soul Connect to Body." In the next breath, my soul was released from my body and stored inside the container. The effects of the poison slowed my body but with my soul removed, I now had perfect control of my thoughts and actions.

About the Author

Guinevere E. Mayberry is a fantasy novelist and the author of the new book, Twin Mages, the first book in the Life Mage Trilogy, and the exciting new storyverse, Noble Mages. The Noble Mages verse started with a simple question: What would the world be like if everybody could use magic? From there it took off, and Guinevere had no idea how tightly this idea would grip her imagination. From what was intended to be a single romance novel, her writing evolved into two fantasy adventure trilogies and 3 supplementary novels.

When growing up, books were a constant companion to Guinevere. From the romance stylings of Nicholas Sparks, to the fantasy that is the Harry Potter series, Guinevere would read anything she could get her hands on. Her classmates were known to comment on how she could always been seen, walking down the hallways with her nose in a book. And even back then, she knew what she wanted to do. She wanted to be the next author that a new generation would look back on and say “Her books helped me through a dark time.”
