Music inspiration for The Asylum
Welcome to The Asylum...or, well the tour for the series and the release of Uneven Justice (The Asylum Fight Club Book 7). I am Bianca Sommerland, author of The Dartmouth Cobras, writing with Tibby Armstrong, author of The Hollywood Series.
Every single book in the series has some music that either added to, or straight up paved the way for different scenes. Both our muses get a huge boost from the songs we listen to. Whether it’s a fight scene, an intensely emotional scene, or just to get the blood pumping to the brain after a long day, The Asylum Fight Club’s playlists have been a huge part of what brings the stories to life.
For Hard Justice, having one of the heroes being the former lead singer of a boy band made the music even more important. Finding songs that represent his style, learning how he sees the world through his lyrics, is a huge part of his journey. It took a few books after Hard Justice before we found a real life singer who really made us think of Jamie Kent. And it’s the lead singer of Badflower, though their music styles are a bit different.
With Noah Leonov being the other hero of Hard Justice, some of the playlist is gritty and shows a lot of the darker energy that comes from who he is. But what’s interesting is seeing how their music comes together to paint a full picture. Like in the story of two very different people coming together to create something strong and deep and wonderful.
Here’s a brief excerpt from Hard Justice (The Asylum Fight Club Book 3):
Pressure at Jamie's throat anchored him as he swallowed just to feel Noah’s hand there. Lips slanted to force his mouth open. Heat invaded. A surge of pre-come slicked his already painfully hard shaft when Noah gripped the back of his skull, tilting his head to tongue fuck him with smooth insistence. The sensual plumpness of Noah’s lips should’ve been a soft landing, but everything about the man surrounded him like a fucking steel cage whose bars he instinctively clung to. Jamie moaned, breathing deep. All Noah had to do was look at him and the world somehow made sense again.
Dark curls brushed his cheeks as Noah smiled into their kiss. “Answer the question, little cat.”
“Hnh.” Jamie tried to reclaim lips that lingered close.
Noah’s grip on his throat tightened a fraction, his thumb brushing along Jamie’s jaw as he whispered, “You take what I give.”
Jamie shook his head a little to clear it, but Noah’s breath across his skin and the hypnotic stroke of his thumb weren’t helping. He tasted the man’s lingering smoky spice on his lips, reminiscent of the Russian Caravan tea they always served at hotels he’d stayed in when Glam toured Eastern Bloc countries.
“You um…” His voice was rough, like he’d been belting out songs to a stadium crowd for weeks rather than sharing his first real kisses with a man who was rapidly taking center stage in his strange new reality. “You didn’t ask a question, I think, but whatever it is you’re wondering, the answer is hell yes.”
Gray eyes darkened with Noah’s lazily predatory smile. “You should be more careful how you answer when you’re given a choice, little cat.”

Bianca Sommerland, author of the award winning Dartmouth Cobras series, was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. After hitting the USA TODAY Bestsellers list, and being invited to teach several classes on writing in the sports and BDSM genre, she retreated to her writing cave and can still be found there, doing what she’s always done. Which is writing whatever the characters tell her to.
When not reading neurotically or writing as though the fate of the world rests on her keyboard, she is either watching hockey or teaching her daughters the beauty of a classic, steel pony while reminiscing about her days in Auto Body Mechanics. Her dream is to one day own enough land to park a few junkers on so she can work on restorations in her spare time. She also wants a pony.
